Marans are known for their large dark reddish brown eggs.

2021 was the first year offering Black Copper Marans by the half and dozen. We have been selecting our breed stock since 2018. Our egg shade is between 6-8 on the Marans shade card, and do note that egg shade will lighten as the birds lay throughout the year and move closer to molting. Think of it like an ink cartridge! The hen coats the egg - as the final stage - in the egg laying process! Marans do not lay every day. A marans deepest shade eggs will be in her first year - it’s 15-20 eggs before she is coating them entirely and showing her true potential.

Black Copper Marans • With every generation, we strive for quality birds. We are breeding for type, temperament, and egg color.

Our Marans are quite fertile - 2024, 2025 resulted in 95%+ hatch rates.

When hatching BCM, we wait until day 17 - to candle - otherwise there is not much to see. On day 17, the air cell will be quite bright and visible. I send along a photo example- in the hatching egg shipments.

We are members of the Marans Club. We use the American Poultry Association Standard of Perfection - as a guide. We hatch only the darkest eggs each breeding season to increase/hold egg color in future generations. With that said - No birds are perfect. Each breeding season we make selections and improvements. It’s all slow going and takes time.

We hatch a lot of black copper marans for grow outs. For cockerels - we begin culling at 5-6 months and from there the group gets smaller. We typically - grow out for ten months before seeing any potentials for the breeding program. It’s suggested that “slow maturing cockerels are often the best ones in our experience.” and we have seen that to be true. Always a work in progress!
